Why am I doing this course?
When you begin an online course in Project Management, you should be confident in your own mind that the answer to both of these questions is yes:
- Is the goal of the course aligned to my reason for doing the course?
- Is the design of the course suited to achieving that?
So, as you begin the Project Management Concepts course online, you should know what the course aims to achieve and how it’s been designed, so that you can answer these questions for yourself.
Background
The Project Manager Competency Development (PMCD) Framework of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) describes the Knowledge, Performance and Personal competencies needed to manage projects effectively. The PMI® explains that “in order to be recognised as fully competent, a project manager must satisfy each of these three dimensions.”
Study programmes which serve all of these competencies are very rare. Although some courses are designed to provide the Knowledge component of competency, many Project Management courses simply aim to get participants to pass a certificate exam.
Goal and design of the Project Management Concepts course
The primary goal of the Project Management Concepts course is for you to develop key Personal competencies essential to responsibly growing your career in Project Management, and to doing your actual work.
The critical thinking, systems thinking, risk awareness and study behaviours which you develop during the course lay a foundation for any other Project Management study which you may pursue afterwards.
The course is designed to ensure that your Project Management Knowledge will deepen in ways that ultimately lead to improvements in your Performance in key areas in your work. This is because the course forces you to contemplate what you are learning. It’s think or sink!
