A personal study success story
Studying together as a couple can be helpful as it provides the opportunity for important discussions that lead to growth. Albert and Elise* began the Project Management Concepts course together at the end of 2020, and kept the pace more or less together initially, with a few wobbles in between. But life happened and things changed, and the couple decided to put their studies on hold till the end of 2021, when Elise decided that to complete the course alone. Here’s what she had to say about her studying experience, after passing her exam in December 2021.
What Project Management insights that you gained during the course have been most useful to you?
I have definitely gained more insight into how the authority structures operate and how they are compiled. I have also learned a lot about standards and methodologies, which I did not have much knowledge of before.
Have your writing skills improved as a result of the course?
Yes.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how comfortable were you with reading basic schedule information* before the course and by the end of the course?
0 before and 8 by the end.
* Schedule information refers to plans drawn up in project scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, using the Critical Path Method (employing a network diagram), and Gantt charts.
What personal changes have you made as a result of the course?
I have started forming better habits, especially with regards to time management. I have also started using the Rule for Risk more often, should an unforeseen situation come up.
What advice do you have for others to prepare for the exam?
Build a good List of Terms from your reading material, look up and read up on your passwords. Know your definitions, but also, do not just study to remember terms, study to understand the work. The format of the questions change in the exam and if you do not understand what you study, it will be difficult to answer.
How would you describe your overall experience of the Project Management Concepts course?
The course is very informative and definitely a good starting point when you want to start studying Project Management. Tania is extremely helpful and always available and willing to assist.
How did this course and method of learning differ from other formal studies which you’ve done (or which you’re doing right now)?
In this course, there is a lot of emphasis on understanding the work and being able to apply what you learn, it is not just merely working through study material and repeating everything in the exams, as it is noted in the study guide.
