Hennie Boshoff on Project Management Concepts

Stationed in North Carolina, Hennie Boshoff is an experienced procurement engineer working for Bell Equipment. In September 2021, Hennie passed the online Project Management Concepts course along with colleagues from the Global Sourcing team. During the course, he created the template which he and the team used for their List of Terms. Hennie was also valuable participant in several Study Group Meetings.

What Project Management insights that you gained during the course have been most useful to you?

  1. How to approach a project efficiently.
  2. How to properly structure the planning phase of a project.
  3. Properly understand the reporting structures and role players in a project.
  4. How projects should be broken down with as Product & Work Breakdown Structures.
  5. Understand the different responsibilities of every role player in the project.
  6. Gained better understanding of constraints and dependencies in a project.

Have your writing skills improved as a result of the course? If so, in what way?

  1. Be more specific and to the point with written communication.
  2. More effective use of terms as I now have a better understanding of definitions and what they really mean.
  3. How to better construct report writing to be meaningful and specific.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how comfortable were you with reading basic schedule information* before the course and by the end of the course?

5 before and 9 by the end.

* Schedule information refers to plans drawn up in project scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, using the Critical Path Method (employing a network diagram), and Gantt charts.

What personal changes have you made as a result of the course?

  1. Apply the Rule for Risk much more in personal day-to-day life.
  2. Understand and realize the effects dependencies and constraints can have on a project or even tasks in my daily life.
  3. Pay more attention to the planning phase of a project, big or small, to ensure the best processes and realistic outcomes.
  4. Applying PM Concepts has improved my confidence in all communication and negotiations.

What advice do you have for others to prepare for the exam?

  1. Ensure you understand the contents of the course instead of relying on memory.
  2. Read as much as possible on topics that you struggle with.
  3. Ensure you read AND understand the questions.

How would you describe your overall experience of the Project Management Concepts course?

  1. Meaningful and practical.
  2. Improved report writing skills.
  3. Clear and specific communication.
  4. Easy implementation PM Concepts in the workplace.

How did this course and method of learning differ from other formal studies which you’ve done (or which you’re doing right now)?

  1. Much better retaining of information.
  2. Understanding the topic and content is much better than relying on memory.
  3. Short increments of studying with maximum attention paid is much more effective than formal and traditional methods.
