A procurement engineer talks about the Project Management Concepts course
In April 2021, Steffen Zitter started the online Project Management Concepts course along with his colleagues in Global Sourcing at Bell Equipment. The team maintained a consistent study habit and followed the Rule for Risk with each other whenever someone needed more time or support. Here’s what Steffen said about his experience after passing his exam with 97% in August 2021.
What Project Management insights that you gained during the course have been most useful to you?
It was important for me to gain a solid basis and an overall understanding of project management structures and responsibilties, project planning instruments and to get an idea of the different frameworks, standards and methodologies that are available and could be used for our buisness to introduce a formal project management culture.
Have your writing skills improved as a result of the course? If so, in what way?
My writing skills have improved in the sense that I can formulise interrelation more clearly and distinctly—also with regard to the Rule for Risk principle.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how comfortable were you with reading basic schedule information* before the course and by the end of the course?
2 before and 9 by the end.
* Schedule information refers to plans drawn up in project scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, using the Critical Path Method (employing a network diagram), and Gantt charts.
What personal changes have you made as a result of the course?
I have regained confidence in my autodidactical abilities and developed new ambition to continue my independent education path.
What advice do you have for others to prepare for the exam?
From my point of view, it is important to have a well sorted List of Terms available and to have it handy during the exam. It is very helpful to talk about the terms in the list before the examination with other course participant or even externals, as there are sometimes different interpretations, it is useful to gain some new insights and fill existing gaps through a collective exchange.
How would you describe your overall experience of the Project Management Concepts course?
This course imparted the necessary project management knowledge to lay the foundation for a successful implementation of a project management culture in our company.
The experience I gained during this course, especially in terms of the way of learning, had a great impact on me and will continue to do so.
How did this course and method of learning differ from other formal studies which you’ve done (or which you’re doing right now)?
The mixture of autodidactic learning, regular learning level assessments, online and forum interaction, supported by a clear learning path, was key for a successful knowledge transfer and achievement of the learning objective. This way of imparting knowledge, where one is encouraged to strive for knowledge on one’s own, is not comparable to the teaching methodology of the past.
